Ioan Gruffudd (Welsh: [ˈjɔan ˈɡrɪfɪð] ; ; born 6 October 1973) is a Welsh actor. He has been known for his roles in film and television series in the UK, the United States and Australia.
He first was noted for his portrayal of Harold Lowe in Titanic (1997), and for his portrayal of Horatio Hornblower in the Hornblower series of television films (1998–2003). Subsequent roles have included Lancelot in King Arthur (2004), Reed Richards / Mister Fantastic in Fantastic Four (2005) and its 2007 sequel, William Wilberforce in Amazing Grace (2006), and Tony Blair in W. (2008).

Ioan Gruffudd was born in Aberdare on October 6, 1973, as the oldest of three children. His parents, Gillian James and Peter Griffiths, were both teachers. Interestingly, Ioan uses Gruffudd instead of Griffiths as it is a traditional Welsh variant of his surname. His father held the position of headmaster at two comprehensive schools where instruction was provided in Welsh. The schools were Ysgol Gyfun Llanhari situated in Llanharry, Rhondda Cynon Taf and Ysgol Gyfun Rhydfelen located in Rhydfelin. Ioan’s upbringing was within a Protestant non-conformist family, and they relocated to Cardiff during his childhood.

Gruffudd’s educational journey began at Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Aberdar (Ynyslwyd; currently situated in Cwmdare), then he moved to Ysgol Gymraeg Melin Gruffydd (Whitchurch, Cardiff), and finally attended Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf (Llandaff North).

As a teenager, Gruffudd exhibited exceptional talent as an oboist achieving Grade 8 level in the ABRSM music examinations. He played for several years with the South Glamorgan Youth Orchestra but had to give up when acting consumed most of his time. He also received accolades for his high baritone singing during school days and even won a prize at the National Eisteddfod. In his words, “As a Welshman, I grew up in a culture of singing and performing with music…I think it was through this performing that I got my confidence as an actor.”

Ioan Gruffudd embarked on his acting journey at 13, debuting in the Welsh television film Austin (1986). He transitioned to the Welsh language soap opera Pobol y Cwm (People of the Valley) from 1987 to 1994 while also playing football with the soap’s team. He was active in stage performances and starred in a production of Cwlwm at the 1991 Urdd Eisteddfod. In 1992, he enrolled at London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), overcoming feelings of isolation and struggle to excel in Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler by 1995.

Gruffudd then portrayed Jeremy Poldark in a TV remake of Poldark (1996), followed by roles as John Gray in Wilde (1997), Fifth Officer Harold Lowe in James Cameron’s Titanic, and Horatio Hornblower in ITV and A&E’s adaptation of C.S Forester’s novels. Gruffudd first encountered Alice Evans in 1999 while they were working on the film 102 Dalmatians. In 2003, the couple relocated to Los Angeles. They tied the knot in Mexico on September 14, 2007, with Matthew Rhys, a fellow actor from Wales and Gruffudd’s long-time friend, serving as his best man. Both Gruffudd and Rhys are supporters of Trust PA, a charity focused on spinal injuries based in the UK.

In a 2020 interview, Gruffudd revealed that he and Evans were experiencing difficulties within their relationship. The couple’s separation was announced by Evans in January 2021. On March 1st of the same year, Gruffudd initiated divorce proceedings. Following this, on February 14th, 2022, he sought a domestic violence restraining order against Evans for his protection and that of his girlfriend Bianca Wallace.

On August 2nd of that year, he was granted a three-year permanent domestic violence restraining order against Evans. As of July 3rd, 2023 an LA judge officially declared Gruffudd and Evans divorced. In 2024 Gruffudd announced his engagement to Bianca Wallace whom he had met four years earlier in 2020.
